The Benefits of Foot Surgery

If foot disorders like hammertoes or bunions are experienced, surgery may be considered as an option for relief. Pressure and pain are often the results of tendons becoming too tight. Additionally, the toes may become unbalanced and rub against each other, causing friction. These conditions may cause the joints to become inflamed, which may lead to deformities. Anesthesia is generally administered, which will enable the podiatrist to perform the necessary procedures needed to repair the disorder. This may include adjusting tendons to their proper size, aligning joints back into place, or possibly changing the shape of the bone. A consultation with a podiatrist is suggested to see if foot surgery is the correct option for you.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact Dr. George Yarnell of Pennsylvania. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.

How To Teach Children About Proper Foot Care

Your child may begin to walk at about 12 months of age. Recent research has shown that it’s beneficial to walk barefoot as much as possible, which may help strengthen the foot muscles. It’s important to measure the feet every few months in the early years to ensure a proper fit while choosing shoes. As your child gets older, common ailments that can occur may include athlete’s foot, ingrown toenails, and plantar warts. It’s crucial to maintain daily foot care, which includes washing the feet in lukewarm water and drying thoroughly between the toes. Additionally, complaints about heel pain can be a common occurrence, typically resulting from playing sports. If the pain becomes severe, a consultation with a podiatrist may be suggested to alleviate any discomfort and to learn about possible treatment options.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. George Yarnell of Pennsylvania. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Does My Child Have Flat Feet?

Flat feet is a condition that often refers to the arch appearing flat while walking or standing. It’s a natural condition commonly seen in infants and young children, and it will often correct itself as the foot becomes stronger. Occasional pain is associated with flat feet and is usually noticed while walking or running. The entire foot may feel pain and discomfort, or it may be in a specific area. It’s important to note if your child is experiencing these symptoms, as the condition may affect the structure of the growing foot. It’s possible that this condition may stem from underlying causes including certain forms of muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or a predisposed inherited disorder. If the child is heavy in weight, obesity may be a contributing factor due to the additional weight placed on the feet. The condition typically does not require treatment unless the pain is affecting daily activities. If you think your child may have flat feet or is experiencing pain, please consider a consultation with a podiatrist.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Dr. George Yarnell from Pennsylvania. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a common condition affecting many people. Athletes, people suffering from diabetes, or those with weakened immune systems may be more susceptible to developing this condition. The fungus thrives in moist, warm environments, and it may be common in people who sweat often. The fungi are generally very small, and it’s easy for them to enter the body through small cuts on the feet. Some of the symptoms of this condition may include the nails changing color and becoming thickened, in addition to breaking easily. The fungus doesn’t normally lead to serious problems, but it can make the toenails have an unsightly appearance. When you visit your podiatrist, a proper diagnosis can be made and treatment options can be discussed.

For more information about treatment, contact Dr. George Yarnell of Pennsylvania. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a condition that affects many people and can be especially hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating and avoiding it.

Antifungals & Deterrence

Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.
